As part of the build-up to the club’s first internationalfriendly of the season, D.C. United players have been all over the Washingtonarea airwaves this week.
On Wednesday, Dwayne De Rosario joined The Sports Junkies on106.7 FM The Fan to preview both the All-Star Game and this weekend’saction. A day later, Ben Olsencelebrated the league’s historic triumph over Chelsea with an early wake upcall on DC 101’s Elliot in the Morning.
But on Friday, defender Daniel Woolard made an appearance atthe last spot on the dial where one would expect to find soccer talk - Washington’scountry music station, WMZQ 98.7 FM.
“There are a few guys on the team that listen to country,” Woolard acknowledged after joining WMZQ morning-drive host Boxer early Fridaymorning. “Not that many, but Perry [Kitchen] is from Indiana, so he’s proud. Also, I think Chris is getting into it.”
Stop the presses. California-cool Chris Pontius listens to country?
“I’ve always listened to country,” confirmed the MLS all-star MVP. “I thinkDaniel just found out recently.”
Woolard says many of his international teammates have a longway to go when it comes to country music.
“They don’t really know much about it,” laughed the28-year-old left back. “It’sspecial to our country. It’s good tolisten to, good for your heart.”
After a win, Dwayne De Rosario’s iPod usually pumps a widevariety of music through D.C.’s locker room. We asked Pontius if there was any chance some country might soonfind its way onto the captain’s playlist.
“No way, absolutely not,” he replied incredulously, before giving the suggestion a second thought. “Actually, I’d be fine with it. Maybe not for pregame, but after a gamesome country might be nice to unwind to.”
