Copa D.C. XI Recap

Longtime contenders Aegean Hawks FC finally hoisted the Copa D.C. XI Championship trophy after defeating tournament newcomers, White Eagles, 8-3 in Saturday’s championship match at the Rockville SportsPlex. The Hawks won the area’s top indoor tournament by defeating perennial contenders Paolo’s Sport Boys, Copa D.C. IX Champions Charm City F.C. and nine-time champions La Mara on their way to the championship match.

The Aegean Hawks left with the Copa D.C. XI trophy, the $3,000 top prize and gold medals for each player. The Aegean Hawks also received a free entry into Copa D.C. XI in 2012 to defend their title.

White Eagles, playing in their first Copa D.C. tournament, won six consecutive games prior to the final. The Eagles received $1,500 and silver medals for their achievement. Defending champions La Mara, the winners of nine previous Copa D.C. tournaments, claimed third place and took home $1,000 and bronze medals.

Copa D.C. XI, presented by Volkswagen, fielded 24 teams over three days for the first time in tournament history. Previous editions of the tournament had been capped at 16 teams. Each team received a full set of adidas uniforms, twelve tickets to D.C. United’s match against Real Salt Lake and twelve D.C. United gift bags.
