La Super Copa VI Kicks Off

Spartan FC (Dark Blue) - 2011 La Super Copa

La Super Copa VI, presented by Volkswagen, kicked off this weekend under a mixture of weather conditions that included warm sunshine, driving rain, frigid cold and even a spell of marble sized hail. Despite the uncertainty associated with the weather, one fact remained clear; a new tournament champion will be crowned in 2011 as last year’s trophy winners, the Aegean Hawks F.C. were bested in their opening match.

Spartan FC (Monarch’s Soccer League) solidified themselves as the early favorite, thrashing Palmeiras (Latin American League) by a score of 7-2.

While Spartan FC’s barrage on the net wowed the spectators at the RFK training grounds, the game everyone came to see kicked off at 11 a.m., when reigning champions, the Aegean Hawks FC, defended their crown against Inter de Virginia (Manassas Universal League) under an ever-darkening sky. The teams seemed evenly matched until a soft shot slipped by the Hawks keeper, providing the winning goal in a 1-0 victory for Inter de Virginia.

In the 1 p.m. contest Juventud Surena (Copa Taca Champions) pulled off a hard fought 1-0 victory over FAS (Woodbridge International) in a game that saw participants pelted by marble sized pellets of hail. Rounding out the day’s action La Chapin (Virginia International Soccer League) bested Esbanyol (Springfield Soccer League) by a final of 3-1.

Group stage action continues next Saturday at 10 a.m. on the turf field at RFK Stadium. The La Super Copa VI championship game will be played on the RFK Stadium main field immediately following D.C. United’s May 7 home match against F.C. Dallas.

Each team participating in La Super Copa received twenty adidas uniforms and tickets to D.C. United’s MLS First Kick thriller against the Columbus Crew. Verizon Wireless, State Farm, American Airlines and D.C. Lottery are supporting sponsors of La Super Copa VI.
