A busy weekend in the USSF Development Academy saw a number of MLS teamsemerge as winners.
Real Salt Lake came away from four games undefeated, winningall but one match. The U-18s got things started right by beating Santa Cruz BreakersAcademy 4-0, before the U-16s grabbed a 4-3 win of their own. The only blemishof the weekend came when the U-18s tied De Anza Force 2-2, while the U-16s won4-1 for their second win in two days.
New York’s academy came one game shy of a four-win weekend.The Red Bull U-18s romped past Match Fit Chelsea 5-1, and the U-16s tastedsimilar success in a 2-1 win. After the U-18s defeated NJSA 04, 3-0,the U-16s couldn’t complete the sweep, losing 2-0.
The Crew academy enjoyed the best weekend, winning bothgames they played over Internationals – the U-18s winning 1-0, and the U-16s bya 2-1 score.
Most other academy teams experienced mixed fortunes. D.C. United's U-18s tied Cosmos East, 1-1, and the U-16s lost3-0 on Saturday. But United bounced back as the U-18s defeated Met Oval 2-0 andthe U-16s ran out 4-0 victors.
The same could be said for New England’s academy sides. TheRevolution went unbeaten in two Saturday matches, with the U-16s winning 1-0against Potomac, while the U-18s tied 1-1.
But when Baltimore Bays Chelsea came to town the next day, NewEngland suffered two defeats as the U-16s lost 1-0 and the U-18s fell 2-1.
It was a weekend to forget out west for the San JoseEarthquakes academy, who dropped all four fixtures of the weekend. Real SoCal’s U-18s posted a 1-0 win before the U-16s grabbed a 2-1 win over theQuakes, and Cosmos West was too much for Sunday. The Cosmos U-18s won 2-0,while the U-16s sent San Jose to a 2-1 loss for a fourth loss.
