Euro Roundup: Boskovic captains Montenegro in England tie

D.C. United's Branko Boskovic worked 74 minutes in Montenegro's 1-0 win against Wales.

AMSTERDAM – There was a heavy 2012 European Championship qualifying card on Tuesday, with D.C. United midfielder Branko Boskovic sporting the captain's armband for 83 minutes as surprise Group G leaders Montenegro stayed tops with a 0-0 draw at England.


Meanwhile, Valentin Stocker struck twice as Switzerland moved into third place with a 4-1 win against Wales.


Over in Group B, former Real Salt Lake striker Yura Movsisyan made it three goals in five appearances to help second-place Armenia continue their strong start with a 4-0 rout of Andorra.


The Randers FC ace capped a fine move with a doorstep volley to put the hosts up two on 32 minutes.


A late missed spot kick by the hosts helped Russia retain first place in the group with a 1-0 victory at Macedonia. Robbie Keane muffed a potential winning penalty as Ireland remained third with a 1-1 share at Slovakia.


Group A action saw pacesetters Germany stay perfect through four with a patient 3-0 win at Kazakhstan.


Azerbaijan stunned guests Turkey 1-0, allowing Austria to move second after a wild 4-4 draw at Belgium.


The home side had flipped the score line with two goals in the final three moments of regulation, but Martin Harnik slotted home deep into stoppage time for the equalizer.


In Group C, Italy's match with visiting Serbia was suspended due to fan violence, allowing Slovenia to climb level on points with the first place Azzurri with a 1-0 victory at Estonia.


France's resurrection continued as the Group D toppers held their slim edge with a 2-0 besting of neighbors Luxembourg. Belarus stayed a point behind thanks to a 2-0 win over third-place Albania.


The Netherlands extended their perfect record by drilling Sweden 4-1 on braces from red-hot Klaas-Jan Huntelaar and Ibrahim Afellay. Hungary are now second after Balazs Dzsudzsak buried a 95th-minute drive to top home side Finland 2-1.


Group F frontrunners Greece edged Israel 2-1 on a Giorgos Karagounis penalty kick just past the hour. Third-place Georgia were denied a share of the pool lead after Aleksandrs Cauna fired hosts Latvia to a last gasp 1-1 draw.


Heading to Group H, visitors Portugal skated past Iceland 3-1 on goals from Cristiano Ronaldo, Raul Meireles and Hélder Postiga. Denmark, in third, are a point behind the Selecção after topping guests Cyprus 2-0.


Finally, in Group I, leaders Spain made it three for three by taking a 3-2 thriller at Scotland on Fernando Llorente's goal 11 minutes from time. The Czech Republic climbed to second place by virtue of a 2-0 win at Liechtenstein.
