Olsen receives extra fine for ejection

Ben Olsen DL

D.C. United interim head coach Ben Olsen has been fined an additional $750 for his comments to an official following his ejection in the closing moments of his team’s 3-1 loss to the Houston Dynamo on Saturday.

The added amount brings Olsen's total to $1,250, as he received an automatic $500 fine and one-game suspension for being sent off.

Both Olsen and Houston head coach Dominic Kinnear were sent to the locker rooms after stepping out of the technical area to shake hands following a hard foul from DC’s Julius James on the Dynamo’s Dominic Oduro.

Though Olsen maintains the interaction between he and Kinnear was friendly, US referee chief Paul Tamberino said match officials reported that “it was more than just a friendly handshake.”

“The information I got from them [the referees] is that the coaches were having words towards each other and they started to go towards each other,” Tamberino told MLSsoccer.com on Wednesday. “It was clearly out of the technical area and the fourth official and assistant felt they were acting irresponsibly and had them sent off."

Olsen will serve his suspension when D.C. United face the Colorado Rapids at Dick’s Sporting Goods Arena on Saturday, Oct. 2, at 9 p.m. ET.
