Comcast SportsNet to feature D.C. United International Week

Washington, D.C. (July 7, 2009) - Through their continued long-term partnership with the leader in local sports
television, Comcast SportsNet, D.C. United today announced plans to air encore presentations of five memorable D.C. United international friendlies July 13-17 as a part of D.C. United International Week. The matches each feature the Black-and-Red in compelling match-ups against some of the biggest cubs in soccer, Leeds United, Bayer Leverkusen, Chelsea FC, Celtic FC and Real Madrid CF. Hosted by Comcast SportsNet’s D.C. United play-by-play announcer Dave Johnson, a historic United international friendly will air each night at 7:00 p.m. ET.

Comcast SportsNet will feature D.C. United elements during SportsNite at 6:30 p.m. and 10 p.m., including a unique profile on the storied career of the top goal scorer in MLS history, Jaime Moreno. The network will also have special guests from United each evening in Washington Post Live at 5 p.m. The D.C. United International Week schedule is as follows:


Monday, July 13 - D.C. United vs. Leeds United (May 16, 1997)

In United’s first major international friendly, Marco Etcheverry, John Harkes and company battled a club at the top of English soccer. A beautiful goal by Tony Sanneh led to a draw that put the Black-and-Red on the international soccer map.


Tuesday, July 14 - D.C. United vs. Bayer Leverkusen (May 23, 2001)

In a seven-goal thriller, D.C. United stood toe-to-toe with the German giants, leaving the RFK Stadium faithful breathless from the end-to-end action.


Wednesday, July 15 - D.C. United vs. Chelsea FC (July 28, 2005)

Billed as the ‘Clash of Champions,’ United stunned the English Premier League titleholders with an early goal. Chelsea countered and withstood a late barrage to hold on to victory.


Thursday, July 16 - D.C. United vs. Celtic FC (July 12, 2006)

United was well prepared to face Scottish power Celtic FC. The Black-and-Red scored early and often in a blowout win.


Friday, July 17 - D.C. United vs. Real Madrid CF (August 9, 2006)

Played before nearly 67, 000 fans in Seattle, WA, United played even with the world’s most decorated side. The game sets the tone for a rematch in the Nation’s Capital later this summer.


D.C. United’s international ambitions continue this summer. The Black-and-Red will host Real Madrid at FedExField August 9 at 3 p.m. ET and will feature United facing recently announced acquisitions Cristiano Ronaldo and Kaka, the 2008 FIFA World Player of the Year and 2007 FIFA World Player of the Year, respectively.
