D.C. United are set to play against FC Cincinnati in their 16th match of the 2021 MLS Regular Season on Saturday, July 31 with kickoff scheduled for 7:30 p.m. ET. D.C. United will look to continue the strong defensive display they showcased in their previous match when they go on the road to take on FC Cincinnati on Saturday night.

In their last match, D.C. United won 1-0 against the New York Red Bulls on Sunday, July 25. A first half goal by Ola Kamara was the difference as United kept their fifth clean sheet of the season and defeated their rivals at home. The goal was scored in the 27th minute when Julian Gressel pressed a Red Bull defender and stole the ball in the attacking third before squaring it to Kamara who finished it first-time past the New York goalkeeper. Kamara nearly got through and scored again in the closing stages of the first half, but his shot got blocked at the final second by a Red Bull defender. The Red Bulls were unable to record a single shot in the first half, and the Black-and-Red went into halftime leading 1-0.

United continued to control the match with their defense in the second half. Despite only keeping 40% of the possession, United only allowed one shot on target for the entire match. Gressel nearly doubled United’s lead on two separate occasions in the final stages of the match including an 87th minute free kick that was saved by the goalkeeper and a shot from his own half in added time when the goalkeeper was off his line that went just wide. D.C. United hung on to keep the clean sheet and won the match 1-0.

The match on Saturday will be the fifth ever time the two clubs face off against each other. United have yet to lose to FC Cincinnati and have a 2-0-2 record against them in club history. The last time they played was on October 18, 2020 when D.C. United went on the road and won 2-1. United’s two goals in that match came from a Donovan Pines header in the first half and a Chris Odoi-Atsem match-winning goal in the 78th minute to break the 1-1 tie.
