Stadium History

Robert F. Kennedy Memorial Stadium (RFK) is operated by the D.C. Sports & Entertainment Commission. The historic stadium has been pleasing crowds with its outstanding amenities since 1961. Home turf for pro sports, college athletics, and high school games, RFK was the first major stadium designed specifically as a multi-sport facility for both football and baseball. The NFL’s Washington Redskins flourished at the stadium for 36 seasons, from 1961- 1996. RFK also served as the home to the expansion Washington Senators of the American League from 1962-1971. The National League’s Montreal Expos relocated to Washington as the Washington Nationals in 2005 and played at RFK through 2007.

RFK Stadium has served as the home of four-time MLS Cup Champion D.C. United since its inception in 1996 and was the first venue to host the MLS Cup Championship three times. The stadium’s storied bouncy seats and nostalgic charm add to the authentic soccer atmosphere that fans relish at the games. In addition to two MLS Cups, RFK has hosted several memorable soccer matches including World Cup games in 1994, Olympic men’s soccer in 1996, the 2002 and 2004 MLS All-Star games.

Music fans have been thrilled by performances under the stars at RFK featuring such celebrities as Michael Jackson, The Rolling Stones, the Eagles, Elton John, and the Grateful Dead, just to name a few. Major religious groups have found the facility quite suitable for open-air convocations. RFK has the seating capacity and the support staff to make any outdoor event a spectacular success.
