"Having to fight back and come back from three goals ... is not easy to do," said United head coach Tom Soehn. "I credit the guys for fighting through and making sure the effort was there, but the execution wasn't there on the day."

An early miscue handed the Salvadorans a precious away goal and while D.C. captain Jaime Moreno pulled back a leveler from the penalty spot before halftime, Firpo kept United on the back foot, defending stoutly in the second half and nearly stealing a win on several late counterattacks.
