On a cool night in Charleston, newly acquired Designated Player Hamdi Salihi notched the lone goal as D.C. United topped the Chicago Fire in the opening match of the 2012 Carolina Challenge Cup.

D.C. United played its fourth preseason scrimmage against Real Salt Lake Tuesday afternoon at the Reach 11 Sports Complex in Phoenix, Ariz. The Black-and-Red showed character and determination to overcome a 0-1 deficit, earning a 1-1 draw against the Western Conference rivals.

D.C. United played its third preseason scrimmage Saturday afternoon against Sporting Kansas City in Casa Grande, Ariz., falling 2-1. Regardless of the final score, United players felt they improved over the prior two preseason matches, relying on the team's depth to overcome the abscences of injured playmakers Branko Boskovic and Dwayne De Rosario.

Olsen's team stepped onto the field with a classic 4-4-2 formation; with Marcelo Saragosa and Perry Kitchen in the middle, and Andy Najar and Nick DeLeon on the flanks. Trialist Ryan Richter paired with Maicon Santos up top.

D.C. United faced Swedish team Malmo FF at IMG Academy
in Bradenton this morning, in a match that saw the sides play to a 1-1
draw. After ten days of training in Florida, the scrimmage marked the end of
the first stage of preseason for United, who will remain in D.C. for three days
before departing to Arizona on Monday.

D.C. United traveled to Fort Myers, Fla. to take on
the Chicago Fire at Florida Gulf Coast University in front of a sellout crowd
of 1,800. The match marked the first test of the year for Ben Olsen and his
players, who delivered a solid defensive performance and a clean sheet, as
United tied 0-0 with the Fire.

WASHINGTON – A goal from New York Red Bull defender Jon Barrajo in the 86th minute secured a 2-2 draw against D.C. United in a Wednesday Reserve League match.

Barrajo’s tally off a set piece snatched a point for the visitors, who trailed 2-1 at the half. Brandon McDonald and Brandon Barklage each had first half goals for D.C., while New York midfielder John Rooney scored from the penalty spot.

WASHINGTON – Sporting Kansas City needed a win on Saturday night against D.C. United to clinch first place in the Eastern Conference, and defender Matt Besler’s delivered, firing home the winner in the 54th-minute to earn SKC a 1-0 win on the road to close out the regular season.

Kansas City created the game’s first chance in the 4th minute when Kei Kamara curled in a teasing cross from the right wing to Omar Bravo in the six-yard box. The Mexican international’s touch betrayed him, however, and his bouncing volley went out for a goal kick.
