NEW YORK – There is an ongoing discussion taking place in
MLS circles that is central to what the league’s 34-game regular season will look
like in 2011.

In an interview with Soccer
America, MLS Commissioner Don Garber says a decision is being weighed between
“two approaches”: 1) maintaining the balanced format of 2010 in which every
team plays the others the same number of times; or 2) moving back to an
unbalanced schedule that promotes rivalries.

Yet the departure of Jaime Moreno is just about the only topic on his lips this week, as his longtime friend and colleague prepares to ride into the sunset after one final Saturday evening at RFK Stadium.

Jaime Moreno, after 15 seasons in MLS, is done. The D.C. United legend will say goodbye on Saturday at RFK Stadium.

What he leaves behind is hard to put into words or even thoughts. He will always be remembered for his numbers—132 goals, four MLS Cups, five Best XI nods—and for the highlight images he produced as one of the subtlest magicians this league has ever seen or will ever see.

But he also leaves behind something much more. The very league itself.

MLS will bid a fond farewell to D.C. United legend Jaime Moreno this weekend. And no one will be fonder of saying adiós than the many defenders he has terrorized during his 15-year career.

“I would definitely say that,” veteran Kansas City Wizards defender Jimmy Conrad told this week. He laughed and added, “I’m particularly happy he’s going because he’s had my number over the years.”

During our recent trip to the Moreno Mansion, Jaime was gracious enough to show us his library.  It’s actually less like a library and more like a shrine.  The walls are lined with trophies, medals, special gifts, and photo displays highlighting key moments from his career for both club and country.
