OBETZ, Ohio – There will be no saving the healthy starters for the back end of a two-game set at D.C. United, Crew coach Robert Warzycha said.
The first game Wednesday in RFK Stadium is a semifinal in the US Open Cup, with the winner facing either Seattle Sounders FC or Chivas USA in October.
“The Open Cup is another trophy we’d like to have,” Warzycha said. “We’re going to do everything we can to win the game.”
Once, they were kings.
D.C. United rose from the primordial soccer ooze back in the mid-1990s along with nine other MLS teams, and they climbed out as champions. Bruce Arena’s team ran roughshod over a league where the two universals were Murphy’s Law and D.C. dominance, winning three of the first four MLS Cups and two of the first four Supporters' Shields.
They won the double (MLS Cup and US Open Cup) in their first season. They won a continental title in their third. All told, D.C. won 12 titles in their first 13 years of existence.
OBETZ, Ohio — Tournament play is different than the regular season. Just ask Columbus Crew midfielder Brian Carroll.
In his early years with D.C. United, he became tournament tough, something that is helping the Crew now.
Carroll and his current club are a third of the way through Group B play in the CONCACAF Champions and into the last eight games of the MLS season but put that aside Wednesday for a semifinal of the US Open Cup vs. D.C. United at RFK Stadium (the winner faces either Seattle Sounders FC or Chivas USA).

What were you doing on May 20? Too long ago to remember? It seems like a lifetime ago for FC Dallas, who have reeled off a 12-game unbeaten streak since they lost way back when. They're at No. 2 this week after a scoreless draw in Columbus, while RSL hold down the top spot and LA plummet to their lowest ranking this year.

A quick glance at the Eastern Conference standings leading up to the U.S. Open Cup Semifinal match-up between D.C. United and the Columbus Crew seems to show that United doesn’t have much of a chance to make it to the final. CARSON, Calif. – Gracias a un golazo de Justin Braun, las Chivas USA pudieron rescatar tres valiosos puntos en casa ante un D.C. United que propuso aunque no le alcanzó.
