New York Red Bulls striker Juan Agudelo and Philadelphia Union midfielder Amobi Okugo are among the seven Major League Soccer youngsters that highlight the 18-man group United States U-20 head coach Thomas Rongen has called in to face Mexico and Colombia at the Torneo de las Americas from Nov. 21-29 in Kennesaw, Ga.

The five other MLS players included in the roster are Chivas USA’s Bryan de la Fuente and Cesar Zamora, D.C. United's Conor Shanosky, Los Angeles’ Tristan Bowen and Toronto’s Fuad Ibrahim.

Forget that old cliché about a 2-0 lead: The most dangerous lead in soccer is a one-goal margin heading into the second game of a two-leg series.

That’s the main thing we learned after this week’s round of high-energy seesaw playoff games set the MLS Cup final four and eliminated three of the four higher seeds, including the defending champs.

In just about four weeks, FIFA's maligned Executive Committee will vote to award the 2018 and 2022 World Cup.

For David Downs, executive director of the United States 2022 Bid Committee, almost all the hard work is complete. It's just about tying up loose ends now.

"We're making sure that our final presentation is in the best shape and is representative of all the effort we've put into the bid," he told by phone on Thursday afternoon. "It needs to be consistent with what we've been saying all along.

The men in the middle got their due praise on Friday when the league announced its adidas Referee and Assistant Referee of the Year awards.

Veteran Kevin Stott earned the 2010 adidas Referee of the Year honor. The 43-year-old officiated in 17 games this season, dishing out 62 yellow cards and just two red cards — the lowest tally for referees that worked 15 games or more. He whistled an average 22.2 fouls per game.
