AMSTERDAM – There was a heavy 2012 European Championship qualifying card on Tuesday, with D.C. United midfielder Branko Boskovic sporting the captain's armband for 83 minutes as surprise Group G leaders Montenegro stayed tops with a 0-0 draw at England.

Meanwhile, Valentin Stocker struck twice as Switzerland moved into third place with a 4-1 win against Wales.

Over in Group B, former Real Salt Lake striker Yura Movsisyan made it three goals in five appearances to help second-place Armenia continue their strong start with a 4-0 rout of Andorra.

WASHINGTON — The mere mention of the phrase “torn ACL” can leave professional players feeling squeamish. One of the most dreaded injuries in sports, a damaged anterior cruciate knee ligament usually means painful surgery, grueling rehabilitation and serious career disruption, to say the least.

That has all become far too familiar to Brandon Barklage, the midfielder who showed real promise in his first two seasons with D.C. United only to have both campaigns cut short by ACL tears.

WASHINGTON - Chris Wondolowski has done it all for the San Jose Earthquakes this season, and on Saturday night — thanks to a victory on the road against D.C. United and the Sounders' defeat of the Kansas City Wizards — he led the Earthquakes into the playoffs for the first time since the franchise restarted in 2008.

Wondolowski scored both goals for the Earthquakes in their 2-0 playoff-clinching victory over the United. Although not a constant threat throughout the match, Wondolowski scored in trademarks style.
