NEW YORK — Much of the big-name talent was overlooked in the first stage of the MLS Re-Entry Draft on Wednesday, but the day turned out just fine for Joseph Ngwenya and Aaron Hohlbein.

D.C. United opted to pick up the contract for Ngwenya and the Columbus Crew picked up Hohlbein as the only two selections of the league’s inaugural event. All other teams in the draft passed and did not take a shot on one of the 35 players eligible for selection.

Talking Tactics: Determining a player's worth

For clubs, the offseason requires a full cost-benefit analysis
Tactics: Offseason costs

Back in March, when the relieving news that a new CBA had been reached came down, few recognized how this MLS offseason would differ from others.

At that point, the Expansion Draft was still a foggy event sometime in the future. The expanded homegrown rules were exciting for their potential, but we all knew they needed time. The Re-Entry Process was still being fully baked, its ramifications for teams and players still more theoretical than concrete.

If Dema Kovalenko has to leave the Los Angeles Galaxy, he’d at least like to find himself back in the company of friends.

WASHINGTON – Bill Hamid’s future looks as bright as any goalkeeper’s in Major League Soccer.

Rising from the D.C. United youth academy to sign a senior contract last year, the 20-year-old promptly jumped on the fast track this past season, challenging veteran Troy Perkins for the top job and showing ample ability with 20 saves and a 1.25 goals-against average in eight league starts. Furthermore, his presence and promise have drawn comparisons to US national team stalwart Tim Howard, an MLS alum presently performing at the top echelons of the English game.

GA edge past Rayo

MADRID — Heavy rainfall and a physical match threatened to undo the Generation adidas side in their friendly with the Rayo Vallecano reserves, but a second-half goal from FC Dallas’ Peri Marosevic gave the MLSers a 1-0 win on Tuesday.

Marosevic powered home a header in the 51st minute, getting on the end of Dilly Duka’s corner kick after freeing himself from his marker. The FCD striker had been given the starting nod over New York’s Juan Agudelo.
