NEW YORK - Portland fans got their wish Monday to cheer their expansion Timbers on in the quest for the U.S. Open Cup, thanks to a fortunate flip of the coin at Major League Soccer headquarters.
The Timbers won a coin flip to earn the right to host a USOC play-in game against Chivas USA in March, the first of eight outcomes determined by a coin flip to decide the host sites for a number of the USOC’s early matches.
