Short-handed D.C. in search of answers
Humbled, frustrated and now short-staffed to boot, the D.C.
United back line is awkwardly positioned to attempt a rebound this week.
United are missing two defensive starters and a holding
midfielder to long-term injuries, while one crucial center back was felled by
hamstring troubles last week. Yet another faces a red card suspension for
Saturday’s meeting with the Chicago Fire at RFK Stadium.
Yet winless D.C. simply must stop the bleeding at the back
in order to vanquish the three-game losing skid that threatens to ambush their
entire season.

Barklage's development moving at a good clip for United
The new MLS collective bargaining agreement, crafted on the
eve of the season, mandates a bump in club salary strictures and significantly
raises the wages paid to rookies and other young players. But to veterans of
the developmental roster designation, some frugal habits prompted by miserly
reserve salaries die hard.
To wit, D.C. United second-year pro Brandon Barklage still
cuts his own hair.
“I’ve cut my hair for the last six years, just buzzing, just
using the guards and everything,” he explained recently. “It saves a lot of
money and time.”
Jaime and friends
Every time that I think I have witnessed the last unthinkable, beautiful moment of Jaime Moreno’s glorious career, he comes up with something new and astonishing. Who else in MLS could have pulled off his shoulder fake to force the goalie to drop the ball at his foot? Chris Seitz is a good goalie, but, if he plays for 100 more years, he will never have another mistake like that one. Only Jaime could have made it happen: only Jaime.
