With 2013 just underway, the D.C. United Academy is in full swing, with a couple of items of note.
In conjunction with the groundbreaking multi-year deal unveiled on Wednesday between MLS and USL PRO, D.C. United today announced that the club has entered into an affiliate agreement with USL PRO side the Richmond Kickers.
With the new year just underway, the 2013 D.C. United Training Program – led by Pre-Academy and Academy coaching staff – is open for registration and the winter session is just around the corner, starting on Sunday, February 3. The Training Program, which is available to the U9-U11 and U12-U13 age groups, presents a key opportunity for participants to be identified and scouted for United’s Pre-Academy squads and the recently introduced U-14 Academy Team.
The first round of games for the 2013 MLS Combine kicked off today at Central Broward Regional Park in Lauderhill, Florida. 54 bright, young stars will take the field in hopes of impressing coaches and technical staff from around the league. D.C. United and the Annandale Boys & Girls Club (ABGC) – in conjunction with adidas – today announced an affiliate agreement, the first of its kind between D.C. United and a club in the State of Virginia. Under the agreement, ABGC will be one of D.C. United’s primary sources in identifying and developing the top youth talent in Virginia. United will share its coaching resources and will work with ABGC to follow its training curriculum and system of play. Top players in the ABGC system, identified by both D.C. United and ABGC, will have the opportunity to join the D.C.
D.C. United and Freestate Soccer Alliance – in conjunction with adidas – today announced a historic affiliate agreement, the first of its kind for both clubs. Under the agreement, Freestate will be one of D.C. United’s primary sources in identifying and developing the top youth talent in Maryland. United will share its coaching resources and will work with Freestate to follow its training curriculum and system of play. Top players in the Freestate system, identified by both D.C.
Three U-18 D.C. United Academy players – Suliaman Dainkeh (Reston, Va.; Reston Soccer), Ian Harkes (Fairfax, Va.; Herndon Youth Soccer) and Michael Sauers (Glen Arm, Md.; Baltimore Bays Chelsea) – were selected to 2012 NSCAA All-America Teams, with Harkes and Sauers named to the High School Boys Team and Dainkeh named to the Youth Boys Team. Additionally, former Academy player Collin Martin is in Sunrise, Fla., through Dec. 22 for a U-20 U.S. Men’s National Team training camp.
As part of a recent gotsoccer.com contest, Academy brothers Mike and Jack Daunt submitted videos of their tennis ball juggling skills. The brothers have been selected as finalists, and you can vote for them online.
Mike Daunt is part of the D.C. United Academy U-13 squad, while older brother Jack plays for the U-15s. The Academy is on a winter break and will return to action in January. Read all Academy and youth news.
MLS announced the 2013 MLS Combine Invite list today. The initial list is comprised of 54 of the top NCAA Division I players from the past season.
Former D.C. United Academy midfielder Uwem Etuk was selected to the list, after a successful collegiate career with West Virginia. Etuk saw time in 75 matches for the Mountaineers, notching eight goals and 18 assists.
