United Reads, presented by TD Bank, returns for fall 2011

Black-and-Red players to appear in Metropolitan area elementary schools
October 10, 2011

D.C. United and its charitable arm, United for D.C., announced today the schedule for United Reads during the fall of 2011. United Reads is a signature program created to encourage elementary school students in the greater Metropolitan area to fall in love with reading and to promote the importance of healthy lifestyles. United Reads is currently in its ninth year thanks to the generous support of presenting partner T.D. Bank and program sponsors Volkswagen and Gallup Government. The program will continue to partner with the Heart of America Foundation to provide new books to every student during D.C. United player visits to each school.

The fall season is highlighted by a host of player appearances at participating schools in addition to a collaboration with the United Way National Capital Area to host joint assemblies at three schools.  The joint assemblies will feature the United Reads program with United Way’s Fun.Fly.Fit program to reinforce United for D.C.’s goal of encouraging students to maintain an active mind and active body.

At each visit D.C. United players will lead interactive games in activities with the students as well as share their personal experiences and successes with an emphasis on the importance of reading and staying healthy. Players will also sign autographs, take photos, and distribute two new books to each student to continue developing their personal libraries.
