The Strikers, who play in the North American Soccer League (NASL), defeated the Richmond Kickers in penalties on June 1 following an extra-time thriller that was started earlier in the day due to scheduling conflicts and then delayed because of lightning.

The Florida-based side are 8-9 all-time in the Open Cup and have never advanced past the third round.  Last year, they were ousted by the Charleston Battery 3-2 on May 27.

The Strikers, named after the original Fort Lauderdale Strikers of the old North American Soccer League from 1977-1983, became Miami F.C. in 2006 before rebranding and relocating back to Fort Lauderdale in 2011.

Fort Lauderdale, who currently sit in seventh place in the NASL, boast a strong attack: Brazilian forward Maicon Santos (who played in 26 matches for D.C. United in 2012) is second in the league with four goals.
