Internazionale Milano, owned by D.C. United owner Erick Thohir, sit at the top of the Serie A table as the Italian league takes a break for the holidays.  17 matches into the season, Inter lead the league with 36 points, one ahead of Fiorentina and Napoli, who both have 35.

Inter have put themselves in strong position to contend for the Scudetto, or league title, outscoring opponents 23-11 so far this season.  Forward Stevan Jovetic told Football Italia he "is not afraid to say Scudetto, but Juventus are still the favorites."

Thohir has also spoken of his team with confidence: "Right now we are building a strong, young team under Roberto Mancini - a team that is ready to challenge the best in Europe. We are solid as a team, with a hunger to win. We sit at the top of Serie A after 17 rounds. Our strategy is clear - to return Inter to its rightful place as one of the top ten clubs in the world."

When asked about the rumor that Lionel Messi wanted to play for Internazionale, (started by Messi's fellow Argentine, Juan Sebastian Veron, who played at the San Siro from 2004-2006), Thohir said, "Lionel Messi at Inter? Why not. When he is out of contract at Barcelona, joining Inter would be a great decision. He would be the star player for us and even have an opportunity to be involved as a part owner. This is common in America, where a legendary player can own a share of the club after they retire, like what Magic Johnson and Michael Jordan have done."
