Najar Powers Honduras into Gold Cup

Last summer he played in the World Cup. This summer it’ll be the Gold Cup.

Former D.C. United Homegrown star Andy Najar is back in the spotlight, this after leading Honduras from the brink of disaster into the 2015 CONCACAF Gold Cup. The 22-year-old winger scored twice in as many minutes on Saturday to help the Catrachos defeat French Guyana, 3-0, in the second leg of their Gold Cup playoff series, overturning a 3-1 deficit in the first leg.

Najar, who picked up his second and third career international goals, delivered a curling strike in the 30th minute and nodded his second into a wide open net two minutes later. Honduras had been forced into the playoff by finishing fifth in the Copa Centroamericana; French Guyana had done the same in the Carribean Cup.

The victory means that Najar will have a chance to face off with the United States as a part of Group A in the Gold Cup this summer. The Catrachos face the U.S. men on July 7 at Toyota Stadium in Frisco, Tex., and then play Panama at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough on July 10 and Haiti at Sporting Park in Kansas City, Kan., on July 13.

Najar has two goals in 26 appearances for RSC Anderlecht, which is currently second in the Belgian Juliper League.
