D.C. United has announced that it has signed free agent Ghanaian midfielder/defender Samuel Inkoom.  Per club and league policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed. Inkoom is available for immediate selection.

“We are pleased to be adding an experienced player in Samuel who will provide us solid depth at the wide midfield and outside back positions,” said D.C. United General Manager Dave Kasper. “We welcome Samuel to the D.C. United family.”

Inkoom, 25, has 46 career appearances with Ghana and has been a member of two straight World Cup rosters. He was a key member of the Black Stars team that advanced to the 2010 FIFA World Cup quarterfinals, starting knockout round games against the U.S. Men’s National Team in the round of 16 and Uruguay in the quarterfinals. Inkoom was also a member of the Ghanaian 2014 FIFA World Cup side but did not feature in any games.

Inkoom began his professional career in 2007 with Sekondi Hasaacas FC, a Ghanaian club based in his home city of Sekondi-Takoradi, before moving to Asanta Kotoko in 2009. Later that year, he signed a three-year contract with FC Basel of the Swiss Super League and helped them win the Swiss Super League title and Swiss Cup in 2010.  Inkoom signed with FC Dnipro Dnipropetrovsk in 2011, playing two seasons before going on loan to French side SC Bastia in 2013 and Greek club Platanias FC in 2014.

Internationally, Inkoom was a member of the Ghanaian U-20 FIFA World Cup team in 2009 and also helped capture the African Youth Championship title in Rwanda in the same year. He recorded his first senior national team cap in 2008.
