Academy Update Image 4-29

All three D.C. United Academy teams went undefeated over the weekend in their games against Continental FC Delco on Saturday, and PA Classics on Sunday. The three Black-and-Red teams scored 17 goals, while only conceding five. The U-16s are on a six-game league winning streak, and the U-18s are on a six league game undefeated streak.

“It was a great weekend with excellent soccer and positive results,” said D.C. United Director of Youth Development Sonny Silooy. “The games against the PA Classics were more or less a test to see how much the teams have progressed from the fall part of the season. They dominated play against a very organized team and passed the test with flying colors this weekend. The Academy department is very pleased with how the players have been performing against strong teams. We have a lot of potential academy pro players in our system right now, and I believe the future will be bright for D.C. United.”

Games against Continental FC Delco:

U-18s: 4-0 win

Goals: Jorge Calix [33, 42], Adam Burnaby-Atkins [56] and Umarr Bangura [75]

Shutout: Scott Rissler

Man of the Match: Jorge Calix

“Jorge gave the team the attacking boost it needed with his two impressive goals in the first half and remained a threat throughout the match,” said D.C. United U-18 Head Coach Nolan Sheldon.

U-16s: 3-0 win

Goals: Lucas Mendes [8, 36] and Liam Hoen-Beck [66]

Shutout: Zachary McMurrer

Man of the Match: Lucas Mendes

“Lucas played a huge role in our attack this weekend and was instrumental vs. FC Delco,” said D.C. United U-16 Head Coach Tom Torres. “The fast start allowed the group to settle in and get clean possession.”

U-14s: 2-2 tie

Goals: Luis Rodriguez-Luna [17, 55]

Man of the Match: Luis Rodriguez-Luna

“Luis was very active this match in different roles,” said D.C. United U-14 Head Coach Jonathan Frias. “He was good at making runs into the box and was able to put two of his chances away for his brace.”

Games against PA Classics:
U-18s: 2-1 win

Goals: Ronald Ventura [47] and Julian Cummings [71]

Men of the Match: Alexander Kao and Tim Oberg

“Alex and Tim were pivotal in disrupting PA Classics' build-up play with their unyielding work rate and impressive tackling,” said Sheldon. “Both players were also very strong in possession, allowing us to control the midfield battle throughout the match.”

U-16s: 2-1 win

Goals: Christophe Koffi [15] and Antonio Bustamante [40]

Man of the Match: Donovan Pines

“Donovan was in command at center back the entire weekend,” said Torres. “Despite a late ankle injury on Saturday, he pushed through it and was competitive vs. PA Classics and their quick attack. When an early injury forced his defensive partner out of the match, he took the reins and was a dominant force in the back.”

U-14s: 4-1 win

Goals: Jacob Vevel [43], Alexis Cerritos [53], SahrFelix Sandy [67] and John Eberle [72]

Man of the Match: Jacob Vevel

“Jacob Vevel was solid on the back line. He communicated and directed the group well and was clean in his distribution,” said Frias. “He also gave us a spark early in the second half when he scored a goal and tied up the match.”

All three D.C. United teams will be in action on Sunday, May 4 against MLS rivals Philadelphia Union. The U-18s kick off at 12:00 p.m., the U-16s at 2:30 p.m. and the U-14s at 5:00 p.m. at Spingarn High School.
