D.C. United Training Notes: May 2

Nick DeLeon

United hit the training field on this sunny May morning, hoping that with the beginning of a new month comes a beginning of a new season. After a few laps around the field, agility work and some passing drills, the Black-and-Red got after it. The competitive juices were definitely flowing while United played a transition drill, working on speed of play and counter attacks. Then, the team went to battle in a scrimmage to end the session.

The “Awesomest” Day Ever!

Good Morning America weekend co-anchor Bianna Golodryga’s husband Peter Orszag, former Director of the Office of Management and Budget under President Obama, stopped by practice today with his son (her stepson) and his friends. The special visitors enjoyed front row seats to the action and then hung around after for autographs from the players.

Golodryga, who couldn’t make it out to the training field today, tweeted:

And all the kids could say was, “This is the awesomest day ever!”

Getting Back into the Action
Nick DeLeon is making his comeback. The 2012 Rookie of the Year Finalist has been sidelined from a March 23rd injury, but was looking sharp in practice today. DeLeon worked though the passing and attacking drills, then hit the sideline to work on his fitness, getting in some full field sprints.

D.C. United General Manager Dave Kasper confirmed that DeLeon is very close to being ready to return to full action, and even hinted that he may make the 18-man roster against the Houston Dynamo on Wednesday, May 8 at RFK Stadium. Tickets are still available.

High Intensity, High stakes
With United’s next game six days away, the session was a little more demanding than a usual Thursday practice. While the team and coaching staff are continuing to look at the positives and build upon the past few games, there was definitely an edge to the session today. The intensity level was extremely high, with an urgent speed of play during the full field scrimmage.
