Andy Najar suspended, fined by MLS

Najar - red card

The Major League Soccer Disciplinary Committee today issued an additional two-game suspension and an undisclosed fine to D.C. United defender Andy Najar for his actions during the Eastern Conference Semifinal game against the New York Red Bulls on Saturday, November 3rd. Najar will be suspended for a total of three games, which includes the automatic one-game suspension for receiving a red card.

The Disciplinary Committee determined that Najar’s conduct put the League in disrepute.

The MLS Players Union appealed the Committee’s decision on behalf of Najar. MLS Commissioner Don Garber heard the appeal and elected to uphold the Committee’s decision.

Najar served the first game of his suspension during United’s match against the Red Bulls on Nov. 8th and the remaining two games will be served during the two 2012 Conference Finals games against the Houston Dynamo.

The MLS Disciplinary Committee announced two additional actions today.

A two-match suspension and an undisclosed fine have been issued to Blas Perez of FC Dallas for his violent conduct that endangered the safety of Bobby Burling of Chivas USA in the 35th minute of the match on Sunday, October 28th. The MLS Players Union appealed the Committee’s decision on behalf of Perez. MLS Commissioner Don Garber heard the appeal and elected to uphold the Committee’s decision. Perez’s suspension will be served during the first two matches of the 2013 MLS Regular Season.

Fernando Cardenas of the New England Revolution has been fined an undisclosed amount for his act of embellishment in the 72nd minute of the Revolution match against the Montreal Impact on Saturday, October 27th.

Fines collected are donated to MLS W.O.R.K.S., Major League Soccer's community outreach initiative dedicated to addressing important social issues affecting young people and serves as a platform for both League and club philanthropic programs. MLS W.O.R.K.S. seeks to establish Major League Soccer as a leader for improving the lives of people through sport.
