D.C. United’s U-18 Academy team built on their opening week victory with a decisive win over Virginia Rush this past weekend at Hampton Roads Soccer Complex in Virginia Beach, Va.
D.C. United opened the scoring in just the fourth minute on their way to an eventual 5-1 win on Virginia Rush’s home turf in Virginia Beach, Va. Kennedy O’Shea (Fairfax, Va./Paul VI HS) helped his squad jump out to an early lead when he turned and finished a shot from the corner of the six-yard box after controlling a pass from teammate Patrick Foss (South Riding, Va.). O’Shea capitalized on a quick counter attack nearly twenty minutes later to tally his second goal of the match. Just seven minutes in the 30th minute, Rafael Fagundo (Herndon, Va./Paul VI HS) added United’s third goal by heading in a corner kick.
United came out in the second half looking to build on its 3-0 lead. After a great passing sequence, substitute James Moreno (Leesburg, Va.), son of 1st team legend Jaime Moreno, buried a volley into the net off of a cross from Jorge Calix (Ft. Washington, Md./St. Stephens Episcopal HS) to give United a 4-0 lead. United quickly matched a late goal scored by the Rush with a Calix goal in the 87th minute to cap off the 5-1 victory.
Both United Academy squads return to action at Long Bridge Park in Arlington, Va. this Saturday afternoon when the 2-0 Pennsylvania Classics come to town for a battle of unbeatens.
In other Academy news, U-18 player Suliaman Dainkeh (Reston, Va./South Lakes HS), started and played 90 minutes in the U-18 Men’s National Team international friendlies against Borussia Dortmund in Dortmund, Germany and Club Brugge in Gilze, Netherlands during the team’s European Training Camp.
