D.C. United’s U-16 Academy team built on their opening week victory with a decisive win over Virginia Rush this past weekend at Hampton Roads Soccer Complex in Virginia Beach, Va.
D.C. United came out strong in their second USSDA league match, scoring three unanswered goals in the first 30 minutes against Virginia Rush. United preserved its 3-0 lead throughout the match by holding off several Rush attacks with solid defending and strong goalkeeping.
Gerson Umana (Lorton, Va.) opened up the scoring when he picked off a pass at half field, dribbled into the 18-yard box and struck a low shot past the Rush goalkeeper. Michael Monahan (Arlington, Va./Yorktown HS) added to the lead after slotting a well-placed square pass from Julian Cummings (Fredericksburg, Va./Stafford HS) into the back of the net. Justin Roberts (Ellicott City, Md.) all but put the match out of reach when he picked off a pass from his left back position and, after beating an opponent, curled a shot into the far side of the net from the corner of the penalty box.
“While its still very early in the season, there were several bright spots from the match,” said Tom Torres, head coach of D.C. United’s U-16 Academy team. “The build up play was solid and the combination in the final third was much improved from last week. The boys put together a strong performance, but we still have a lot of work to do to prepare for a very well organized PA Classics group this weekend.”
Both United Academy squads return to action at Long Bridge Park in Arlington, Va. this Saturday afternoon when the 2-0 Pennsylvania Classics come to town for a battle of unbeatens.
