Branko Boskovic signs new contract

Branko vs Henry at New York Red Bulls

D.C. United announced today the club has signed midfielder Branko Boskovic to a new contract. The 32-year-old is currently in his third season with United, having joined the club in 2010. Originally signed as a Designated Player, Boskovic will not be classified as such under the new contract. Additional terms of the agreement were not disclosed.

“Branko was very professional throughout this whole process,” said D.C. United General Manager Dave Kasper. “It never affected his play. This is a win-win for everybody. He is an important part of our team and we are thrilled that this is now finished and we can move forward.”

Boskovic has played a major role for D.C. United lately, registering three assists in the team’s last four matches. After recovering from a knee injury that sidelined him for the majority of the 2011 MLS season, Boskovic has played 12 of United’s 17 League matches (five starts), registering 523 minutes played during the 2012 MLS campaign.

“I’m staying because this team is really good and we have a chance to be the best in MLS. I want to help the team make the playoffs and win a championship,” said Boskovic.

Entering his first full season with the Black-and-Red back in 2011, Boskovic was emerging as a potent attacking threat for United, playing in four League matches and recording 124 minutes before suffering an ACL tear that ended his 2011 run. He added his best match of the campaign in a U.S. Open Cup qualifier – the same contest in which he was injured – scoring twice against the Revolution on April 26.

Boskovic joined D.C. United on June 14, 2010, appearing in 13 games and starting eight of those contests over the course of the season. After joining the Black-and-Red, Boskovic maintained his duties as vice-captain of the Montenegrin National Team, which enjoyed a 3-1-0 record in UEFA Euro 2012 qualifying during the course of the MLS season.

Before joining United, Boskovic played for Rapid Vienna of the Austrian Bundesliga from 2006 through 2010. Boskovic appeared in 122 matches for Rapid, scoring 24 goals in all competitions.
