Each of the next three nights, Comcast SportsNetwill air a past Black-and-Red match as the network presents D.C. United RivalryWeek.  To get you primed for the contests, we’ll take a look back at eachto see what made them stand out.

Tonight’s match - 7:00 PM: D.C. United vs. New York/New JerseyMetroStars (July 3, 2004)

2004 was a magical year forthe Black-and-Red, but it wasn’t as though D.C. United was a wire-to-wirethreat during the club’s run a to a fourth MLS Cup title.  In fact, when D.C. welcomed thearch-rival MetroStars to town in early July, Peter Nowak’s side was hoveringbelow .500 with a 4-5-5 league record. Winners in just one of their four contests leading up to the AtlanticCup clash, United needed a spark.

Not only would D.C. findits spark, but in doing so, United also recorded its most lopsided victory inthe historic rivalry’s existence.

Club-legend Jaime Moreno, who after spending an injury-riddled season in New York was traded back to D.C.in March of 2004, was the inspiration behind an offensive explosion for theBlack-and-Red.  The Bolivian scoreda goal and assisted two others as United roared to a 6-2 win in front of 16,177fans at RFK Stadium.

The six goals tied afranchise record set against Dallas in 1996 and pushed D.C. into first place in the Eastern Conference.
