Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service

2011 MLK Day of Service

D.C. United kicked off its 2011 United Builds program by celebrating Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service at Central High School in Prince George's County, MD.

The MLK Day of Service is a part of United We Serve, the President's national call to service initiative. It calls for Americans from all walks of life to work together to provide solutions to our most pressing national problems.

While the President and First family visited a Capitol Hill middle school, D.C. United headed to Central High School in Prince George's County to help beautify and upgrade the school's interior. For the second year in a row, the Black-and-Red teamed up with Greater DC Cares in an effort to help a local public school. United's Front Office staff helped to paint hallways, railings, stairwells, and the school cafeteria.

"We decided to choose a project in a Prince George's County High School due to the recent violent activity in their county," explained Kat Cheshire, D.C. United's Community Relations Program Manager. "D.C. United works with a number of organizations in the area and we wanted to show our support for those students who are choosing school over violence by helping to give Central HS a facelift."
