First Team

Nick DeLeon Q&A

Nick DeLeon

How does it feel to be selected seventh overall by D.C. United?

This is what I’ve dreamed of my whole life, and now that the opportunity is here, I’m ready. I’m honored to be selected by the club, and while I’m a little nervous, I’m ready for the next step.

For fans that don’t know about your background, tell us what you bring to the team.

I’m a very attacking-minded player that likes to get forward, but I also love to set-up other players as well. I take a lot of pride in my athletic abilities, and I’m able to take players on one-on-one. Hopefully I bring a nice spark to the team.

You’re joining a very exciting young core of players, along with current MLS MVP Dwayne De Rosario. What are your thoughts about playing alongside these guys?

Dwayne [De Rosario] is my favorite player in MLS. I don’t know what it will be like to play with him and the other guys, but I’m very excited [laughs].

United is a club with many traditions. What did you know about the Black-and-Red before today’s Draft?

I had a meeting with Ben [Olsen] briefly and I really appreciate the history of the club. As a player, what more could you want than to be part of the team that has won the most championships? This is a special team.

We hear that your family has a rich soccer tradition. Can you tell us a bit more about that?

My Dad played here in the States while the NASL was still around. He played for San Jose, New York, and a few other teams, and he also represented his National Team [Trinidad & Tobago]. My mom played a lot growing up, even on a semi-professional team in Phoenix. Soccer is a huge part of my life and my family background.

What would like to say to the fans ahead of your arrival in DC?

I’m very excited to be a part of this team, and I’m going to give everything I have to the club and the city. I’ll do whatever I can to make sure that we have a good season.
