Inter de Virginia win La Super Copa VI

Inter de Virginia - 2011 La Super Copa winners

Inter de Virginia, 2010 champions of the Manassas Universal League, hoisted the La Super Copa VI trophy on Saturday, May 7, claiming the $5,000 prize and rights to claim themselves as the best amateur squad in the Washington D.C. Metropolitan Area. The squad from Virginia bested Municipal Limeno, champions of the Maryland International Soccer League, in penalty kicks at RFK Stadium.

In a historic first, La Super Copa VI, presented by Volkswagen, was held under the lights on the Main Field at RFK Stadium following D.C. United‚s 0-0 draw vs. FC Dallas. As the MLS squads departed the field, the black and maroon sides quickly replaced them, but the scoring drought continued. Despite hard-fought play and some unkind woodwork, the local sides found themselves even at nil after ninety minutes. As dictated by the bylaws of the tournament, the contest was settled immediately by penalty kicks.

During the deciding kicks, it seemed as if the back of the net would remain elusive, as both goalkeepers blocked the first opportunities with a duo of full-extension saves. The third shot, by Municipal Limeno, was a screamer placed at the top center of the goal, which hit the crossbar and fell straight down, stubbornly sputtering away from the goal line. After the initial goal line stand, Inter de Virginia took over, nailing their next three shots to garner a 3-1-penalty kick victory.

Each team participating in La Super Copa VI received twenty adidas uniforms and tickets to D.C. United‚s MLS First Kick thriller against the Columbus Crew. Verizon Wireless, State Farm, American Airlines and D.C. Lottery are supporting sponsors of La Super Copa VI.
