WAGS Fifth Weekend Preview

WAGS

This weekend marks an important turning point for many teams in the Washington Area Girls Soccer League, as it's the halfway mark of the season. Of course, thanks to the weather, the majority of the squads are still trying to make up games, but the race for top honors is fully underway across the divisions.

Sunday also marks Mavis Derflinger Appreciation Day, and every team in action this weekend will be wearing black armbands in honor of the league's legendary co-founder.

High School

In High School Division 1, McLean Fusion is on a six-game winning streak, and it's not likely that anyone will catch them. The Crofton Wolves are the closest in points, but it's hard to consider them a threat when they only carry eight points after five matches. However, if Crofton can win their match this weekend, against ASC Premier Gold on Saturday, they will increase their grip on second place in the division.

FCV Courage are undefeated in four games in High School Division 2 with 12 points, though VIST Fury are close behind with ten points. The Courage have a opportunity to increase their lead if they win their match against the Herndon Sting this weekend, while the Fury will have to wait for May 14th to take on the Courage.

Divison 1

Loudoun 96G Red took control of Under-14 Division 1 last weekend by winning both their matches, and they should pick up another three points this weekend when they face the CYA Chaos, who they beat 4-0 last Sunday. If the Freestate Storm can defeat the FASA Elite Impact on Sunday, they will sneak up to challenge Loudoun for the top spot, swapping places if the Storm win and Loudoun does not.

U-13 Division 1 is still up for grabs, with the top three teams tied with two wins and a tie. SYA FCV face off against ODFC Revolution, SAC United Premier is up against Loudoun 97G Red and McLean Extreme Green will play the ASC Freedom. FCV, Premier and Extreme Green need a good result this weekend to remain in the hunt.

VSA Heat are leading the way in U-12 Division 1, and they will play the SYA Storm on Sunday. However, several teams are hovering just below the Heat in points, and have the opportunity to take over the lead win this weekend. Loudoun 98G Red has the best chance to clinch first again, as they face ASA Arundel Azzurri on Saturday, then SAC Premier on Sunday. VYS Thunder Black, currently in second with eight points, will play FASA Elite Impact on Sunday.

U-15, U-17

In U-17 Division 3, Arlington Intensity Red and MSC Pride are tied for first with seven points, and both squads have two matches this weekend. They will both be looking for two wins to keep them on top of the leader board.

The FC Frederick Royals and Laurel Dynasty Premier, both sitting on 12 points in U-17 Division 5, will face off on Sunday and have the opportunity to jump into the division lead. However, the other team currently tied for first, the Annandale Fury, have back-to-back games this weekend, and will jump onto the top of the division if they win both.

SAC United I Wolves are leading the pack in U-16 Division 3, but they face off against the TSC Thunder Magic, who are a game behind them with six points.

In U-15 Division 2, McLean Green Fury lead the division with ten points, and they will face off against the CYA Comets White on Sunday. However, VSA Heat, sitting in second with seven points, will play Loudoun 95G Red, who is third with six points. The Heat could sneak into a tie with the Fury if they win and the Fury loses.
