RFK Stadium goes green for Red Bull contest on April 21

Washington, D.C. (April 20, 2011) - D.C. United announced today that via a partnership with MLS W.O.R.K.S., the club will continue to serve the community by participating in multiple green initiatives on Thursday, April 21 during the regular season contest with New York Red Bulls, as well as on Friday, April 22.

United is pleased to announce that the Bonneville Environmental Foundation will offset 100 percent of the electricity used at RFK Stadium on April 21, as Atlantic Cup rival New York comes to town in a nationally televised event on ESPN2. The carbon dioxide reduction value is the equivalent of more than 202,998 pounds and will support enough wind energy to power an average U.S. home for over 13 years.

Before the match, D.C. United will be distributing 5,000 National Resources Defense Council Eco-Tip Guides upon entry into the stadium. Additionally, 1,000 seed packets provided by the America the Beautiful Fund will be distributed following the game at exit gates.

On Earth Day, Friday, April 22, D.C. United and Washington Convention and Sports Authority staff members will be participating in a United Builds event from 10:00 a.m. until 12:00 p.m. Staff members will be collecting garbage along the Anacostia River to help preserve the watershed environment along the RFK Stadium grounds.
