La Super Copa VI Quarterfinals set

2011 La Super Copa - Atletico Virginia

Hours before D.C. United’s Charlie Davies whipped the RFK Stadium crowd into a frenzy with his late game heroics, eight of the area’s premier amateur squads battled it out on the second day of group stage play in La Super Copa VI, the annual tournament of champions presented by Volkswagen.

While Davies' penalty kick thrust him into first place in the league’s Golden Boot race, Jon Ports of the Maryland Bays (Maryland Major Soccer League) solidified himself as the early favorite for the La Super Copa VI award, netting a tournament-high five goals as the Bays thrashed AV Challenge (NVSL) 6-0.

In the day’s second contest the champions of the Sierra Leone Soccer League, Le Coq, literally drove their way to the quarterfinals (the team showed up on their own vibrantly painted bus) besting Mar Azul (American Soccer League) 4-2 in a thriller. Le Coq appeared unprepared in the first half with Mar Azul dominating possession. Whatever was said in the Sierra Leone Soccer League’s champions huddle produced a spark, as Le Coq burst into the second half, scoring a tournament-high four goals in a half. The Maryland Bays and Le Coq will meet in next weekend’s quarterfinal.

Rounding out the day’s action, Atletico Virginia (Washington Premier League) rolled past the British Tigers (Arlington Premier Soccer League) by a score of 2-1, while Municipal Limeno (Maryland International) came out on top over Danish Dynamite (WISL) 6-1. Atletico Virginia and Municipal Limeno will meet in next weekend’s quarterfinals.

La Super Copa VI action continues next Saturday at 9 a.m. on the turf field at RFK Stadium. The La Super Copa VI championship game will be played on the RFK Stadium main field immediately following D.C. United’s May 7 home match against F.C. Dallas.

Each team participating in La Super Copa VI received twenty adidas uniforms and tickets to D.C. United’s MLS First Kick thriller against the Columbus Crew. Verizon Wireless, State Farm, American Airlines and D.C. Lottery are supporting sponsors of La Super Copa VI.
