DC ink Uruguayan defender to loan deal

Uruguayan defender Rodrigo Brasesco has joined D.C. United on a loan deal.

D.C. United shored up their defensive group on Monday by signing 24-year-old Uruguayan defender Rodrigo Brasesco on a loan deal from Uruguayan Primera División side Racing Club. He will be available pending receipt of his P-1 Visa and his International Transfer Certificate.

Brasesco has featured prominently for Racing over the past two seasons, helping his team to the top of the Primera División in the most recent Apertura, starting all 15 league matches. During the 2009-2010 campaign, Brasesco featured in 24 matches (23 starts) in 2,106 minutes of play.

“Rodrigo is a young player, but at the same time he is bringing a lot of experience to our club,” United head coach Ben Olsen said in a statement. “He’s played in some very important matches in Uruguay and in South American competition, and he gives us another good option in the back.”

“Rodrigo is strong and tenacious defender who can play in central or right side defense,” United general manager Dave Kasper said in a statement. “We are excited to have conclude a deal to bring him to D.C. United.”

Baresco played in every match for Racing Club in the 2010 Copa Libertadores tournament, helping Racing advance out of the qualifying rounds and into the group stage against clubs like Brazil’s Corinthians and Independiente Medellin of Colombia.
