What's at stake?
Now that each club has their first win of 2010 out of the way, they can focus on getting a few more. DC United are seeking their first win of 2010 away from home in three tries after beating Kansas City 2-1 at RFK Stadium on Wednesday. FCD seek their first home win of the season after an 0-3 start to the year at Pizza Hut Park.
The two teams played a 2-2 draw at Pizza Hut Park on Sept. 5 after DC’s Jaime Moreno scored the final goal of the match in the 58th minute. Jeff Cunningham and David Ferreria tallied for FCD, while March Burch added one for United.
In a 3-3 tie at RFK Stadium on July 14, 2007, DC United had a 3-0 lead by the 47th minute on a pair of goals by Luciano Emilio and another by Fred. Despite the huge deficit, FCD remained undaunted, getting a goal from Carlos Ruiz in the 51st and a pair from Juan Toja in the 71st and 81st minutes to leave the nation’s capital with draw.
Heroes & Villains
DC United forward Jaime Moreno vs. FC Dallas defense: The Bolivian forward has always been at the top of his game against FCD. In his storied career, he’s scored six goals and added 11 assists in 25 games against the Texas side. Four of those tallies have come in the last two years, with three alone in 2009.
FC Dallas forward Jeff Cunningham vs. DC defense: If he is able to rebound from a sore knee that kept him from playing against the Dynamo, Cunningham could be a factor. In 27 career appearances against DC, Cunningham has nine goals and four assists. Two of those tallies have come since he joined FCD in August 2008.
Stat that makes you go “Hmm”
The last time DC United head coach Curt Onalfo coached at Pizza Hut Park was also his last game on the Kansas City Wizards sideline. Cunningham scored four goals in a resounding 6-0 FCD win on Aug. 1, and Onalfo resigned two days later.
He said it
“I think the team is on the right track and I think it was a heck of an effort (at Houston on Wednesday). Maybe I’m a stubborn coach, but I look at that as the level of expectation. You expect your players to work hard, you expect your players to be physical and you expect your players to be courageous.”---FC Dallas head coach Schellas Hyndman
