United confirm summer AC Milan friendly

D.C. United on Monday confirmed the international friendly with AC Milan that was rumored last week.

The first-ever meeting between the two teams will be played at RFK Stadium on Wednesday, May 26 at 8 p.m. ET. Tickets go on sale on April 19.

A club statement says that Brazilian superstar Ronaldinho and Dutchman Clarence Seedorf are expected to be with AC Milan for the match. The two currently do not figure in their national team’s World Cup plans. D.C. United says the Rossoneri are committed to fielding star players who are not called up by their countries to South Africa.

AC Milan is in the running for this year’s Serie A title but their championship hopes took a hit following a 2-2 draw at home against Catania. The tie leaves the Italian giants four points adrift of first-place Roma with five matches remaining. The Italian league season wraps up on May 16.

In the statement, D.C. United president and CEO Kevin Payne mentions that his club is planning to arrange matches against two other major European clubs.

It won't be the only international friendly in the U.S. this summer. The Chicago Fire last week announced a four-team tournament scheduled for May which includes the participation of Legia Warsaw (Poland), Red Star Belgrade (Serbia) and Paris St. Germain (France).
