D.C. United loses Andrew Jacobson in MLS Expansion Draft

Washington, D.C. (November 25, 2009) - The Philadelphia Union today selected D.C. United midfielder Andrew Jacobson in the 2009 Major League Soccer Expansion Draft. Philadelphia selected one player each from 10 of the 15 other MLS teams. Each of the 15 teams was allowed to protect 11 players, leaving all others unprotected and available for selection by the Union.

“We are disappointed to have lost Andrew in the expansion draft,” said United General Manager Dave Kasper. “He is a good young player with an excellent future and we wish him the best of luck in Philadelphia.”

Jacobson signed in February with D.C. United, the team that originally drafted him in the 2008 MLS SuperDraft, after spending the 2008 season with FC Lorient of France’s Ligue 1. Jacobson played in 17 League games (eights starts), amassing 845 minutes in the midfield. In all competitions, Jacobson appeared in 28 games (17 starts) and scored a goal. His lone goal of the season came in a 2-1 win over the Harrisburg City Islanders in the U.S. Open Cup quarterfinals.
