D.C. United advances in CONCACAF Champions League

Washington, D.C. (August 5, 2009) - Following a gutsy 1-1 draw with Firpo at El Salvador’s Estadio Cuscatlan, United advanced to Group B play courtesy of a 5-4 penalty shootout victory. With the win, United assures itself of six more games this season, home and away fixtures with each of the other three teams drawn into the group. The top two clubs will advance to the Champions League quarterfinals in the spring of 2010. The CONCACAF Champions League winner will qualify as the CONCACAF representative to the 2010 edition of the FIFA Club World Cup.


United returns to Champions League action Tuesday, August 18 with a trip to Honduras to face Marathon at 10:00 p.m. ET. The Black-and-Red host Mexico’s Toluca August 26 at 8:00 p.m. ET. D.C. United travels to face the San Francisco FC (PAN)/San Juan Jabloteh preliminary round victor September 15 at 8:00 p.m. ET before hosting Marathon September 24 at 8:00 p.m. ET and the San Francisco FC/San Juan Jabloteh winner September 30 at 8:00 p.m. ET. The club finishes group stage competition with an October 20 fixture at Toluca.


The first home match on August 26 will serve as Special Game E for full season ticket holders. Individual tickets for the home games will be priced at $22 at the Spectator level, $30 at the Premium level, $40 at the VIP level, and $50 at the Mezzanine level, and are available at all Ticketmaster outlets. United qualified for this year’s edition by winning the 2008 U.S. Open Cup. The title gave United a berth in the preliminary round of the Champions League. D.C. United reigned as champions of the region in 1998, defeating CD Toluca 1-0 to win the CONCACAF Champions’ Cup.
