Washington, D.C. (March 31, 2009) - The fourth edition of D.C. United's “La Super Copa”, a single elimination full side 11-v-11 invitational soccer tournament, will kick off this Saturday, April 4th at the RFK Stadium Auxiliary Field. The tournament draw was held last night at El Puente de Oro Restaurant in Langley Park, MD, with a special appearance made by United forward Luciano Emilio. La Super Copa is presented by Volkswagen, Cox Communications and DC Lottery.
The tournament features 16 elite adult teams from local leagues and all participating teams receive one MLS match ball and a full set of 20 new adidas team uniforms. There will be a cash prize of $5,000 for the Cup winner and $2,000 for the runner-up as well as team trophies and individual medals. The Cup’s championship game is scheduled to be played on May 9th. Admission for all games is free of charge.
All participating teams are required to have won the championship in their local league. Additionally, a 20-player roster limit per game will be enforced. Rosters are due prior to the beginning of the team's games and players may not appear for more than one team in the tournament. A roster freeze will be in effect beginning with the semifinals.
