Washington, D.C. (February 3, 2009) – D.C. United announced today that former midfielder John Harkes will join United presenting sponsor Volkswagen at the Washington Auto Show. Harkes will sign autographs on Saturday, February 7 from 12-1:30 p.m. by the Volkswagen display. The 1996 MLS Cup Trophy will also be on display at the event held at the Washington Convention Center.
A member of D.C. United from 1996-1998, Harkes was a central figure in some of the club’s most successful years. He played a significant role in the club’s back-to-back championships in 1996 and 1997, represented United twice in the All-Star game (1997-1998), and helped lead the team to one U.S. Open Cup championship (1996), one Supporters’ Shield (1997) and the 1998 CONCACAF Champions’ Cup and InterAmerican Cup. In total, he made 83 regular season appearances for the Black-and-Red, starting 80 times while notching 14 goals and 23 assists. In postseason play, Harkes started in all 17 games he appeared in and contributed six assists in his three years with D.C. United
