Washington, D.C. (January 5, 2009) – D.C. United midfielder/defender Iván Guerrero has been called-up to the Honduras National Team for training camp in Miami. Honduras is preparing to host the 2009 UNCAF Nations Cup from January 22 through February 1 in Tegucigalpa, Honduras. The UNCAF Nations Cup is the Central American qualifying tournament for the 2009 CONCACAF Gold Cup.
After serving as the captain for the Under 23 National Team in 2000 when Honduras reached its first Olympic appearance, Guerrero has become a fixture on the National Team roster. During the qualifying stages for the 2002 World Cup, he led his team to the final round before falling to Mexico 3-0. Guerrero’s most recent call-up to join his National Team was in a World Cup qualifier on November 19, playing the full 90 in a 1-0 victory over Mexico as Honduras advanced to the final round of CONCACAF qualifying. During his career, the 30-year-old has represented his country in 81 matches.
Guerrero began the 2008 season with the San Jose Earthquakes after being picked in the 2007 Expansion Draft. The Honduran started 13 of 14 games and tallied a goal before being acquired by D.C. United on 7/31 for a partial allocation. Just two days after joining the Black-and-Red, Guerrero was thrust into the starting lineup on 8/2, notching an assist in the 2-0 win. He went on to start in each of the 13 League games he played in, tallying four assists. In other competitions, Guerrero played in four games (all starts).
When speaking of the organization, please refer to the team as either “D.C. United” or “United,” but not “the D.C. United” or “the United.” We appreciate your cooperation.
