U.S. Soccer recently announced the possible third round pairings for the 2008 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup, including United's potential opponent. The second round of play will wrap-up on June 24 and determine opponents for the third round.
United will play host to the winner of Pittsburgh Riverhounds (USL-2) and the Rochester Rhinos (USL-1) in the third round. The game will take place at the Maryland SoccerPlex in Gaithersburg, MD and is currently set for Tuesday, July 1. With the June 29 match against the Galaxy just two days prior, however, our higher-ups are looking into pushing the game back to July 2. We'll keep you posted.
Should the Black-and-Red advance past the third round, the team would face either the Chicago Fire, Minnesota Thunder (USL-1) or Cleveland City Stars (USL-2). Check out the Open Cup bracket right here.
United has won the U.S. Open Cup once - in 1996, completing the first MLS 'double' by winning both MLS Cup and the U.S. Open Cup.
