Troy Perkins

MLS EXPERIENCE

2010: United re-acquired the former Goalkeeper of the Year on 1/13/10 after trading midfielder Fred and allocation money to Philadelphia Union for the top spot in the player allocation order. Following a shaky start and competition with rookie netminder Bill Hamid, Perkins took over the starting job for good in the second half of the season. He played 22 games (all starts) in goal for the Black-and-Red, registering five shutouts and a 1.68 goals against average. In all competitions, Perkins appeared in 26 games (24 starts) for United.

2007: After taking home top goalkeeping honors in 2006 as the Goalkeeper of the Year, Perkins put together another solid year between the pipes. He collected the most wins in MLS with a record of 16-6-7. His goals against average (1.10), saves (117), minutes played (2,610), save percentage (75.5) and shutouts (eight) were all among the top five in MLS. His streak of 362 minutes without allowing a goal (from 7/22 to 8/22) was the fourth longest in the League. He was named the August Player of the Month, after compiling a 5-0 record and 0.20 GAA. He also matched his career high with nine saves in D.C.’s 0-0 result with Chicago on 10/13.

2006: Perkins enjoyed a breakout year, quickly establishing himself as one of the finest goalkeepers in the League. Starting all but two matches of the 2006 season, Perkins was tied for the second-most minutes on the pitch (2,700). He led all MLS keepers in wins (15) and was among League leaders in goals-against-average (1.13) and shutouts (eight). Three of the season’s longest shutout streaks belong to Perkins, as he held opposing teams scoreless for 338, 247 and 243 minutes during the year. Perkins received his first ever Player of the Week award for his performances against Chicago and Kansas City in Week 13, coming up with seven saves between the two games. His solid performances led him to be selected to his first MLS All-Star team, where he helped keep a clean sheet against England’s Chelsea FC.

2005: In his second full season with United, Perkins made two League appearances (both starts), finishing with a 1-1 record and a 1.00 goals-against-average. Perkins led the reserve team to the inaugural championship by posting a 1.50 goals-against-average and 8-3 record, playing all but 61 minutes between the posts.

2004: Troy Perkins joined the Black-and-Red as an undrafted rookie and quickly became one of the unsung heroes of United’s season. Perkins was originally signed to a developmental contract before earning a spot on the senior roster later in the year. He backstopped D.C. United to their first road win of the year with a clean sheet in only his second match of the season, a 1-0 win over New England on 5/29. He finished the campaign with three shutouts and a 1.63 goals-against average in 16 League appearances.

OTHER PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE

2009: In his second season with Vålerenga, Perkins started 27 league matches as the club finished seventh in the Tippeligen. The young American started 33 games in all competitions, recording seven clean sheets in 2009. Additionally, Perkins got his first taste of UEFA Cup football, starting two matches for Vålerenga in the prestigious competition.

2008: After making the switch to Europe and signing for Norwegian first division side Vålerenga IF, Perkins immediately broke into the line-up and helped his new club to its first Cup title in six years. In the Cup final Vålerenga defeated Stabaek 4-1 with Perkins in goal, as Vålerenga earned UEFA Cup qualification amongst Europe’s elite teams.

INTERNATIONAL EXPERIENCE

2009: A U.S. Men’s National Team debutant in 2009, Perkins made his first appearance for the National Team on 1/24 against Sweden at the Home Depot Center in Carson, California. Helping the U.S. to a 3-2 victory in that match, Perkins bolstered the National Team in goal during the summer months in the 2009 CONCACAF Gold Cup. The Ohio native made five appearances during this tournament, keeping three clean sheets. Perkins was named ussoccer.com’s Man of the Match for his efforts in the 2-0 Gold Cup semifinal victory over Honduras. The stalwart keeper ended 2009 with six National Team caps and a 1.26 GAA, the best of any U.S. goalkeeper during the year.

2007: Perkins was called into two U.S. Men’s National Team camps in January, but did not see the field.

OTHER EXPERIENCE

2002: Perkins backstopped the Cape Cod Crusaders (Premier Development League) to the club’s first national championship, compiling a 16-4-2 record between the goal posts. His 0.87 goals-against average was the second lowest in the PDL for the 2002 season.

COLLEGE EXPERIENCE

2003: Perkins completed his college career at the University of Evansville, where he played every minute of every match for the Purple Aces. Perkins allowed only 21 goals in 19 matches, compiling a 1.09 goals-against-average.

2002: Playing in all 18 of the Bulls' games this season, Perkins earned All-Conference USA Second Team honors for USF, racking up seven clean sheets during the 2002 campaign. With a 1.25 GAA in the campaign, he was also honored twice as the C-USA Defensive Player of the Week.

2001: In his second year, Perkins started all 22 games he played in and recorded a 1.27 GAA. For his efforts he was named to the All-Conference USA Third Team.

2000: Perkins was a starter since his first year at the University of South Florida, earning a 1.96 goals against average in 18 games played.
