While D.C. United took a break from MLS play, the Kickers and Spirit were in full swing.
Richmond earned a three point victory yesterday, beating the Pittsburgh Riverhounds 3-1 on the road. Shay Spitz tallied first for the Kickers in the 5th minute of the match, followed quickly by an own goal in the 11th minute, giving Richmond the 2-0 lead.
Shortly after halftime, Pittsburgh found the back of the net, making the score 2-1. The Kickers then added a cushion to their lead in the 68th minute, from the boot of Matthew Delicate.
The Kickers currently sit in 2nd place behind Orlando City SC with 30 points (8-1-6). Richmond is back in action this Friday, June 27 in Charleston, S.C., visiting a Charleston Battery side that is currently ranked 8th in USL Pro standings.
The Spirit hosted the Portland Thorns FC on Saturday, June 21, but did not come out victorious. The visitors posted an NWSL record for most goals in a game, beating Washington 6-1.
After Alex Morgan of Thorns FC netted a brace, her substitute, Jessica McDonald followed suit, scoring two more in the 85th and 87th minute of the match. Midfielder Allie Long and forward Christine Sinclair both tallied for Portland as well, making it six goals for the 4th place side.
Christine Nairn was the lone goal-scorer for Washington, finding the net in the 62nd minute of the match. The Spirit aims to bounce back from the loss this Saturday, June 28 when it visits the Houston Dash.
