DMV Round Up: Richmond Kickers and Washington Spirit

Kickers move on in Open Cup, tie Chicago in League play; Spirit get the W

All three DMV-area teams earned positive results this weekend. D.C. United earned a point at home against Montreal, the Richmond Kickers preserved a tie on the road at Chicago and the Washington Spirit earned three points at home with a win over Western New York.

Richmond Kickers:

In its first match of the U.S. Open Cup, United’s USL PRO Affiliate Richmond Kickers beat RVA FC 6-1. The talented Richmond side, which includes two D.C. United players who will remain Cup-tied to Richmond, moves on to the next round of the historic tournament, hosting the New York Greek American Atlas (USASA) in the Third Round at 7 p.m. ET on Wednesday, May 28, at Richmond City Stadium.

D.C. United Goalkeeper Joe Willis came up big for the Kickers on Sunday. The talented keeper saved a Chicago Fire Reserve’s 90th minute penalty kick attempt to keep a clean sheet and the score even at 0.

Chicago out shot the Kickers 6-1, but Richmond was able to return from Toyota Park with a road point. DCU’s Michael Seaton and Christiano François also featured in the match, subbing on in the 45th and 55th minute, respectively.

The Kickers are back at home this Saturday, May 24 as the USL PRO side hosts the Charlotte Eagles.

Washington Spirit:

At the Maryland SoccerPlex, the Washington Spirit beat the Western New York Flash for the first time in its history.  The Spirit’s Jodie Taylor tallied first, but Abby Wambach equalized shortly thereafter, heading a ball past Washington Goalkeeper Ashlyn Harris. Then, the Flash’s Carli Lloyd put WNY up 2-1 over the Spirit.

The Spirit fought on, evening the score on a Western NY own goal, created by pressure from Taylor. Then, Taylor struck again, putting the Spirit up 3-2. The Spirit is back at the Plex to host Sky Blue FC on Wednesday at 7pm.
