GA Cup Recap: April 15

DCU U-16s receive a tough blow in its first match of the Generation adidas Cup

It was supposed to be warmer in Texas, they said…

The first game for the D.C. United U-16s at the Generation adidas Cup kicked off at 6:00 p.m. against Sporting Kansas City. Winds were gusting over 20 miles per hour, and the temperature quickly dropped into the 40s as the sun set over Toyota Park in Frisco, Texas. United scored early when Owen Marshall put in a goal after DJ Reeves beat his defender and crossed the ball in. United led Sporting KC into halftime, but Sporting scored on a penalty kick in the 49th minute to tie the game at 1-1. Both teams fought against the blustery conditions, but Sporting took advantage of its chances and scored the winning goal in the 68th minute to give D.C. its first loss in eight games.

Next Game:

D.C. United will play its second game on Tuesday, April 15 at 4:00 p.m. CST against the Portland Timbers.

A few notes on the Generation adidas Cup:

Games at the Generation adidas Cup are only 70 minutes instead of the usual 80 because each team plays five games during the week. Games cannot end in a tie. Teams who end regulation play in a tie go straight to penalty kicks. Teams that win in regulation receive three points, while teams that win during penalty kicks only receive two points.
