Preview: D.C. United vs. Montreal Impact
D.C. United will host the Montreal Impact tonight at 7:30 p.m. at RFK stadium (Comcast SportsNet). United, with a record of 2-15-4, is in last in the Eastern Conference, facing a third place Impact side at 10-5-5.
United is 1-1-1 all-time against the Impact, staying unbeaten at home. The last time the squads faced off, United emerged victorious, routing the Impact 3-0 at RFK.
The Impact most recently overcame a top-ranked Sporting Kansas City side courtesy of a Blake Smith goal. The goal was assisted by Marco Di Vaio, the team’s leading scorer with 11 goals. Di Vaio also leads his team, as well as the League, in offside calls. The talented forward plays as high as possible, constantly testing his opponent’s backline.
“They’ve got some threats in Di Vaio – a very good player,” said D.C. United defender Dejan Jakovic. “You have to keep your eye on him; he’s toeing the line. They’re overall just a good team.”
After a solid first half performance and a goal from Luis Silva last Saturday night, D.C. United led the New England Revolution 1-0 going into the second half. Although DCU dropped the match 2-1 after 90 minutes, United’s front six showed plenty of offensive flare and created multiple opportunities.
“We need rhythm,” said Head Coach Ben Olsen. “We need to get a winning mentality.”
Olsen acknowledges the importance of tonight’s match on its own, as well as in preparation for Wednesday’s Open Cup battle at Chicago.
“Let’s get guys in the right form. Let’s get as many guys out there so we can be playing at our best against Chicago,” said Olsen.
