Washington, D.C. (June 4, 2013) – D.C. United today announced that its nonprofit arm, United for D.C., will hold its “Spring Kick” Soccer Tournament tomorrow (Wednesday, June 5), which will mark the end of the spring season of United Soccer Club (USC). The tournament will involve all children, ages 6-12, who participated in USC this spring. This event will be held from 4:30-7 p.m. on the RFK Stadium Training Field and will feature tournament style matches, D.C. United players – including Homegrown goalkeeper and U.S. international Bill Hamid – mascot Talon, games, music and much more.

Spring Kick” is a one of a kind tournament that brings together youth from all over the D.C. Metropolitan Area to RFK Stadium. All participants will have recently completed a 10-week soccer program, as part of United Soccer Club, and will have the opportunity to showcase their skills in front of friends and family. Food and drinks will be provided for the athletes, as part of the program’s focus is on healthy lifestyles.

United Soccer Club, one of United for D.C.’s three signature programs, enrolled close to 700 children in the program this spring. The curriculum for USC includes lessons on the importance of a healthy lifestyle through physical activity and proper nutrition, as well as on life skills that are beneficial on and off the field. The program operates at 13 sites with two middle school teams. All teams met three times a week after school for 90-minute sessions, and players were taught by D.C. United staff, current United players and talented local coaches. The 2013 season also saw a series of friendly matches throughout the season, which furthered the participants’ sense of team, commitment and healthy competition.

USC middle school sites in 2013 included Harrison Parks and Recreation and Friendship Academy Tech Prep, whose students participated in the DC Scores League. Elementary sites located in Wards 1, 5, 6, 7 and 8 included Fort Davis Parks and Recreation Center, J.O. Wilson Elementary School, Barry Farm Recreation Center, Ketcham Elementary School, Boys & Girls Club at Orr Elementary and the FBR Branch at THEARC, Turkey Thicket Recreation Center, Harrison Recreation Center and Parkview Recreation Center, Richard England Clubhouse #14 and Long Branch Community Center in Silver Spring, Md.
